I just want to mention the first feature-length film to come out of Saudi Arabia, Wadjda. If you have a chance to go see it, please do. Sure it doesn’t deal with the issues of the royal family and any authoritarian rule. And it doesn’t, likewise, directly comment on issues in Western societies, but it’s an interesting story and a beautiful tale of a girl who wants something and is in in a society that does not allow it.
